Stories from the field - Intercultural relations in international development

Being an aid worker involves working in multicultural teams, in complicated international settings, being exposed to considerable pressure. Skills of intercultural communication, the capacity of self-reflection and the ability to analyse situations of interpersonal interactions from a holistic point of view are competences that do not only help deal with stress but make the personal involvement more meaningful, and render work certainly more professional.

The aim of the training: is to create a space for reflection about the intercultural implications of international development. Participants will learn about the historical and political context in which international development and aid has developed into a major space of interaction between the Global North and the Global South, as well as about their own strategies in intercultural encounters. By the end of the course participants will have developed awareness of structural and political frames determining the dynamic of intercultural relations and will have enhanced their skills to better treat intercultural conflicts.

We suggest the training to: NGO staff, Aid workers and volunteers, expatriates and nationals, with considerable field experience as well as to those who are preparing now for a career in international development.
